Neutral density (ND) filters are an essential type of photographic filter for several reasons. They allow photographers to control the amount of light passing through the lens, giving them greater creative control over exposure. ND filters are also useful for video content creators, as they help set shutter speeds to match the frame-rate while maintaining the depth-of-field of the footage.

ND filters come in a variety of densities, ranging from ND2 to ND100000. They can generally be categorized into three groups: light density filters (ND2 – ND8), middle density filters (ND16 – ND200), and deep density filters (ND500 – ND1000 / ND100000).

Light density filters are useful for shooting in bright, sunny conditions, allowing for reduced depth of field or wider apertures. Middle density filters add motion blur to objects in conditions where the cameras shutter speed alone would not be enough. And deep density filters, such as ND500 or ND1000, can capture dramatic, unreal images that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

HOYA offers a wide range of ND filters, branded as PROND EX, for both photographers and filmmakers. These filters use HOYAs clear optical glass and are mounted in lightweight, precisely crafted aluminum frames. They also have front filter threads for attaching additional filters or a lens cap.

One of the biggest issues with ND filters is color shift, which can occur due to low-quality materials, poor manufacturing quality control, or issues with infrared light leaking into the image. For example, combining PROND EX 8 and PROND EX 64 will have the same effect as an ND500 filter, creating an unreal, fantasy world. Combining PROND EX 8 and PROND EX 1000 will have the same effect as an ND8000 filter, allowing for the capture of the suns surface without overexposure.

For example, the combination of PROND EX 8 + PROND EX 64 will give the effect equal to ND500 filter, that can be used to express an unreal fantasy world. The combination of PROND EX 8 + PROND EX 1000 will give the effect equal to ND8000, that will allow to capture the surface of the Sun without overexposure with solid colour and visibility of the black spots.
